The Crist House sits on land originally deeded to John Cleves Symmes for his service during the American Revolution. The house itself was built in 1815 by Abraham Crist and his wife Margaret. The Crist family (led by patriarch Christian Crist) were some of the first settlers to the area. They arrived from Montgomery, New York, and settled the area which would become Montgomery, Ohio. Abraham and Margaret Crist sold the house to Abraham's brother Cornelius and his wife Sarah, who expanded the house in 1825. Cornelius and Sarah lived in the house for 33 years, raising nine children. They sold the house, along with 45 acres, to J. Addison.
The Crist House has had some of the most influential families of Montgomery call it home and is rumored to have been a stop along the Underground Railroad. There are also stories of the Civil War era, most notably regarding Morgan's Raiders, tied to the home.

As a direct descendant of Cornelius and Sarah Moore Crist, I am delighted that you are honoring them and their beautiful home. After Cornelius and Sarah sold the home, they moved with several of their children to Jennings County, Indiana, where they died in 1859 and 1876 respectively. They are buried in Baldwin Cemetery, North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana. Several of their children died young and are buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Montgomery. I have a lot more info on this Crist family, and will post if you would like. Diane McGowan Tichenor
Dear Ms. McGowan Tichenor,
My Great Uncle, Royal Crist sent a note to my father, (Virgil C. (V.C.) Howser, along with an article published in 1939, in the Cincinnati (unk. last name of paper, but it was not the Enuirer)
Royal Crist was a brother to my grandmother Fredonia (Freda) Crist-Howser. Born January 19, 1892.
The article focused on a monument erected in the Hopewell Cemetery, honoring Christian Crist, a distant relative of the Crist-Howser family. I believe Christian Crist was 'scripted' the property of Montgomery. He named it in honor after his last posting, after the Revolutionary War, from Fort Montgomery, New York.
My sister, Phyllis Ann Howser-Scholp Ph.D and I have worked many years to track the Crist family name. The 'newspaper' article as I mentioned above, is the only real reference we have to Christian Crist.
I am Stephen L. Howser, a resident of Bellbrook (Greene County) Ohio.
